Sweet Little Surprises

This cake was a little surprise for a special friend who just celebrated her birthday. It was the perfect size for her to share with a few coworkers today.

Fun with Fondant

So, I finally decided to get my hands in some fondant and now I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner! Making the marshmallow fondant is not too hard, it tastes better than store bought, and you can do so much with it.

My first go wasn't anything great, just wanted to get a feel for it. It ended up going to one of Neal's little friends.

Then there was my first ordered fondant cake, just did the zebra stripes with fondant, still a little intimidated.

Then came Jen's baby shower practice cake, and that's when I realized that I truly LOVE fondant!

The Ugly Cake

Everyone has their experiences of "just not right" when it comes to stuff like this. So...I present to you my ugliest cake ever. Now I tell you that this yummy lemon-berry cake knew it's fate of being an Auburn cake and decided it would fight me tooth and nail on being "perfect". First my layers were slanted because I forgot to check my level before cutting them, then my homemade buttercream icing just never got that perfect consistancy. It was actually base-iced four times, yes FOUR times. Then my colors just weren't deep enough. And to top it off, the tiger paw is a bit misshapen. Oh, and I desperately wanted to put a little elephant inside it (like the baby in the King Cake) but could not find our little one from our Noah's Ark in time to run it through the dishwasher for a proper sanatizing...that would have been a real hoot if I had though. But live and learn. At least it was a cake just for the enjoyment of a friend and her family and not for an occasion or event. So let's hope the scrumptious taste redeemed my not-so-stellar performace on the decor.
